We can choose our friends but we cannot choose our family. As we are born into it, so too are we born into society and its definitions: economic class, race, gender, the good or bad part of town, language. We carry the inheritance, as it is our essence, but struggle when it is interpreted, for at times established roles in society force it to emulate punishment worthy of purgatory. So we try to break free in an attempt to escape to a better, more peaceful place. In the process, some of us go mad with despair or become violent and live in crime; those who move on celebrate temporarily only to find they have shifted battlegrounds. Life in society becomes the struggle to overcome the sins of society. We owe past generations for the history that falls upon us and to them to learn it in hopes of progress in the process of peace.
